What is the right heating option for you?

The most common source of heating in Utah is a natural gas fired furnace.  Due to the relative cheap operating and low maintenance costs, natural gas fired furnaces are a great heating source that have an average life span of about twenty years.  The most difficult decision for you the home owner is trying to select the best gas fired furnace for your home.  Several factors can play a role in this decision such as currently installed equipment, how long you intend on remaining in the home, if you have finished the basement or planning to in the near future, current finances, and other house specific factors.  Furnace manufacturers offer everything from your basic builders grade on/off single stage furnaces to high efficient modulating gas and modulating blower furnaces with all of the bells and whistles.  Equally important is the mechanical contractors responsibility to size the correct amount of heat (BTUH rating) and airflow (CFM) which will be required to maintain a comfortable living space within your home.  It is vital that you can trust the mechanical contractor who is advising you when making these decisions, way too often we get service calls for hot and cold spots, cooling coils which are icing up, and general comfort complaints which almost always lead back to poor decisions or bad mechanical contractor advise given when selecting a new gas fired furnace for your home.  TNT Mechanical has the knowledge and expertise to help you navigate all of the different equipment options and sizing requirements so that you can make an informed decision and ensure you get the best equipment possible for your home.

Gas Fired Furnace Options and Discriptions

  • 80% Efficient Gas Fired Furnaces – 80% Efficient gas furnaces have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (A.F.U.E.) of 80%.
  • 90+% Efficient Gas Fired Furnaces- 90+% Efficient gas furnaces have an annual fuel utilization efficiency (A.F.U.E.) of 90% or higher.
  • Single Stage Heat – Furnace has one level of heat which will turn on or off as required.
  • Two Stage Heat – Furnace has two levels of heat (high & low) which will turn on or off as required.  Since low stage heat is adequate to satisfy household heating demands 80% of the time, a two stage unit runs for longer periods and provides more even heat distribution.
  •  Modulating Heat – Unlike furnaces that operate all on or all off, modulating furnaces are designed to minimize energy us by modulating gas heat output as well as running at lower fan speeds while maintaining heating demands.
  • Variable Speed – Allows the furnace to run at a range of speeds vs. standard furnaces that run at full speed when operating.  The variable speeds are used to help control a more uniform heating and cooling temperature throughout your home.
